The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ meetings concluded yesterday with the election of Archbishop Kurtz as the new president of the conference (here is a photo from the 6:30AM Mass).
He succeeds Cardinal Dolan who had a very successful three-year term. Yesterday I was having breakfast with Ave trustee Bishop O’Connell of Trenton, New Jersey who was president of Catholic University for over decade, and Cardinal Dolan came by the table and asked about Ave Maria University. His eminence seemed like the happiest guy on earth, so that job must have been quite the time-consuming responsibility that its reputation avers. Ave Maria Trustee Cardinal O’Malley is doing well and remains very interested in the success of Ave Maria, as does our friend Cardinal Wuerl and a host of other bishops who had nice things to say about us.
It was a blessing to be with the leaders of our Church. Our Bishop Dewane was the top vote-getter in the election for membership on the Catholic Relief Services board. His experience with Cor Unum and international relief will come in handy as the world responds to the tremendous sorrow in the Philippines in the wake of the horrendous typhoon over the weekend. Let us all pray and support the Church’s relief efforts.
