Happy New Year everyone! Currently I am buried under almost two feet of snow, so I figured now would be a good time to mentally head back to sunny Florida and reflect on my favorite parts of the fall semester.
I have to start off with (surprise, surprise) Disney World! The Student Life trip to Disney World for Night of Joy, the Christian music event, has definitely become a favorite trip. This year we got hit with quite a bit of rain, but being the brave Disney fans we all are, we donned our Mickey Mouse ponchos and toughed it out. Some of the highlights of the night were performances by the Newsboys and Building 429 and a guest appearance by Jodi Benson.
In the beginning of October, the members of this year’s Orientation Team went out to Marco Island for an O-Team appreciation trip. We had dinner on the beach, went paddle boarding and kayaking, and had a blast.
Another one of my favorite trips of the semester was when we went to Universal Studios for Halloween Horror nights. I had always wanted to go, so I jumped at the chance as soon as I saw that Ave was sponsoring a trip. Terrifying experiences are always good opportunities for bonding, so the night was full of scares and lots of fun.
The football games this year were also great! It was our first year playing on our own field and the team had an awesome season, finishing with a 8-2 record.
In November, there was a free Josh Turner concert in Immokalee, just a short drive from campus. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many Ave students in one place off campus. Ave vans drove out and everyone else carpooled to the concert. It was an amazing concert, tons of fun, and it was super nice that it was so close to campus.
In the beginning of December, I went with Ave’s Service Learning group to Immokalee for Sports Day. We went out and just played games and hung out with a group of underprivileged kids from Immokalee. We all had a blast and it was super rewarding getting to spend the day doing volunteer work.
Snow Ball is a big highlight in the month of December. We all love getting dressed up and whether you go with a date or in a group with your friends, you’re pretty much guaranteed a good time.
One of the last events of the semester was the Holly Jolly Christmas Party before break. We had a gingerbread house building competition, hot chocolate and popcorn, and they projected Miracle on 34th Street on the screen outside.
It was then time to buckle down for finals. Sophomore year was definitely more challenging than Freshman year, so I had a lot of work to do. In between studying we played sand volleyball, went to the snack breaks for ice cream and late night breakfast, and spent a lot of time on the Rosary Walk and in the chapel. The breaks definitely helped relieved some of the stress and we were all able to successfully make it through finals week.
As the temperatures continue to drop and the snow keeps falling, I look forward to getting back to Florida and starting a new semester! The spring semester is a perfect time to come visit Ave, come take a break from the cold and come visit our gorgeous, sunny campus. See you soon!
