Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C. visits AMU

In an hour or so a man who has spent his life as a missionary working for the Church and serving her poor, Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., will be addressing our students as part of the Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal’s annual conference.

The photo of him with Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and soon-to-be-canonized John Paul II speaks volumes.

49 seconds and St. Thomas Aquinas

The Super Bowl may be a test between the two best football teams in America, but there is another competition taking place that is every bit as heated, and of course I am referring to the race to the bottom between Hollywood and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Recently the film “The Wolf of Wall Street” was released with high acclaim.  It has grossed over $100 million already.  In the past I have enjoyed some Scorsese movies but I couldn’t in good conscience go and see this one.  I read its review on Pluggedin.com and “The Wolf,” aptly named, is nothing less than a mainstream porn flick (making a mockery of the “R” rating, so families everywhere take note: R is the new X when the Motion Picture Association decides to contort its flimsy standards).  “The Wolf” boasts of having over 500 uses of the F word, and so I am sure that in no time the 1,000 threshold will be reached with another of Hollywood’s “avant-garde” films.

    David versus Roe v. Wade

It is not a coincidence that the Mass readings for Wednesday of the second week of ordinary times are perfectly applicable to the March for Life events today.  A seemingly random alignment of liturgical readings and world events is a phenomenon not uncommon for people of faith.  It is God’s way of speaking to us through His word in the circumstances of our lives.

Ave Maria heads to the March

It is hard to be believe on a beautiful day in warm, sunny Florida that tomorrow scores of Ave Maria University students will be arriving in Washington, DC in the midst of a snow storm, with the wind chill temperature expected to be in single digits by the time these students find their “home” on the gym floor of St. John the Evangelist parish in McLean, VA.  The March for Life is the next day and the forecast is for sunshine – and miserably frigid conditions.  The high is expected to be 20.  Gusts of high winds will make it worse.

    Off and Running

Our students returned yesterday and the new semester is off to a fast start.

And so is the new year!  One of Florida’s most prominent public servants in its history – two-term governor and three-term U.S. Senator Bob Graham – visited Ave Maria University for the first time.  He and his lovely wife Adele had lunch with my family on Sunday and it was good to catch up with them and show them around campus.

    AMU Welcomes the New Year

The New Year is off to a fast start but 2013 will be a tough act to follow!

For the Church, an unprecedented resignation by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and the emergence of Pope Francis highlighted the “Year of Faith.”

    AMU featured on EWTN

I don’t know if you saw the EWTN show that Colleen Carroll Campbell hosts on Wednesdays that aired last night at 6pm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNZMDkEHT40).  She was very kind to spotlight Ave Maria’s 22% reduction in the tuition and fees “sticker price” for next fall, and also explore how Ave Maria happily promotes our love of the Catholic Church in so many ways, including through the new Mother Teresa Project.  Colleen is a natural and so good at what she does - and if you read her hugely successful “My Sisters the Saints” book she published last year (which is coming out in paperback in 2014) then you know that her talents are many.  I have known her for years and her three beautiful children (she is expecting her fourth in February) as well as her wonderful husband (John, a medical doctor who cares for elders).  They moved from their comfortable lives in St. Louis to undertake this adventure in Catholic television. The Church needs more voices like Colleen’s in order to harvest the fruits of the feminine genius that Pope Francis recently touted.  Mary Ann Glendon, Helen Alvare, Colleen and others have much to offer the Church as it engages the culture and transforms it.

Celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day

Over the desk in the President’s office of Ave Maria University is an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and today, throughout the world and very particularly in the Americas, we celebrate a feast day commemorating her miraculous appearance in Tepeyac, Mexico in 1531.

The Donahues: A Lasting Legacy at Ave Maria University

Yesterday’s dedication of the Jack and Rhodora Donahue Plaza at the Oratory of Ave Maria University was yet another milestone in our 10th anniversary year of celebrations.

Jack and Rhodora have been special friends of the University from the time Tom Monaghan first mentioned to them his vision of it – and long before a shovel turned the rich soil of Immokalee tomato fields into what today is the foundation for our beautiful campus.  Jack was chairman of the Board of Trustees and has remained a trustee to this very day.  Outside of Tom and Marge Monaghan there is no family more responsible for the establishment of Ave Maria than the Donahue family (and daughter Patty Dolan is a trustee, too).

    AMU Celebrates 27 Pioneers

Today the Church celebrates the life of the great missionary St. Francis Xavier, who with St. Ignatius and five others, founded the Society of Jesus (the religious order of our beloved Pope Francis).  I thought of him and the hidden role he and his colleagues played in founding the Jesuits when I had the good fortune this week of celebrating the pivotal contributions of the 27 men and women who have been at Ave Maria University from the very beginning.  We may have only one founder – Tom Monaghan – but these 27 “mothers and fathers” of Ave Maria University formed a brave band of true believers who instinctively understood the importance and value of Ave Maria University and Tom’s vision, and persevered despite great adversity.
