December 8, 2015 marked Ave Maria University’s first day “across the canal!” For months, students have been waiting for the debut of AMU’s Our Lady of Guadalupe statue which will serve as the center of a Grotto Prayer garden across the canal. The 10 foot statue serves as another reminder of the school’s devotion to Mary. As President Towey said, “This will be a place where students can cry tears of sadness and tears of joy; or even where students will propose to one another.”
This legendary AMU event commenced with a special mass to the Immaculate Conception at 3:45 and led into a Rosary procession across campus, over the bridge, and ended at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Statue. After making or renewing consecration to Jesus through Mary, individuals left a rose at the feet of Our Lady as a symbol of love and devotion to her. The ceremony ended with a celebratory ‘Fiesta’ hosted by the Student Government Association. Students and community members enjoyed authentic Mexican food, a cheerfully decorative environment, and a Mariachi band performance.
What a beautiful way for the community to gather and embark Pope Francis’s Year of Mercy, giving honor to Mary and praise to Jesus!
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!
