Last weekend, AMU held their annual fall retreat on campus. As most of the students know by the awesome graphic design found on the shirts and flyers (created by Adrienne Garalde), the retreat was titled ‘Welcome Home.’ It served as a much needed reminder for everyone that only Christ could be a stable anchor and unmoving foundation for our lives.
The retreat team did an amazing job creating a welcoming environment that felt like home. They even served snacks and coffee! The weekend consisted of heartwarming talks, messy games, small group time, men and women sessions, a skit put on by some Ave students, music by Ricky Vazquez (a music missionary who has worked for Life Teen), and Adoration held in the Oratory. Though the talks were engaging and humorous, there was free food, and retreatants bonded over flour fights; Most of the students would agree the best part of the retreat was Adoration, where we were welcomed Home to the Church and Christ on the altar. During Adoration retreatants were welcomed home by Our Creator, face to face.
In just a short month I have been able to call this beautiful University home. I’ve already made great friends that I know will be my friends for life. Yes, this place full of exotic insects, rain, heat, swing dancing, endless amount of events and Jesus, is our home. Ave Maria’s strong Catholic community, filled with genuine, kind people, made me feel at home. Even the setup of AMU with the Oratory in the center of Ave Maria, mirrors our experiences here at the University. AMU is a place where you can meet your best friends, make amazing memories and know Christ is in the center of it all. Almost every freshmen can agree that AMU has become our new home, and we wouldn’t change it for the world.
