Why We Need Philosophy

Do the humanities have any practical value? Should we view philosophy as having instrumental usefulness for other disciplines (particularly legal and STEM fields)? Dr. Donald Drakeman, who visited AMU in February, presented to our faculty a stimulating discussion of these issues in his recent book, _Why We Need the Humanities: Life Science, Law and the Common Good_ (2015). An excerpt:

‘Scientists and physicians can figure out whether a new drug actually extends lives, and mathematicians can calculate costs, but the STEM fields, by themselves, cannot provide a considered judgment about who should have those benefits and at what price.’
